    If you use a large ratio, you can use gears to seemingly slow down a motor spinning at a much faster rate. I am not sure how I would go about doing the electronics, but if you can find a quartz clock schematic you might be on track. Maybe someone else knows of a quartz clock movement.

    Depends on the orientation, if hooked up across the mosfet drain - source it very well could be to protect from back EMF as the circuit is driving a motor. Schematic could help identify its use and help in deciding a replacement. What is the mosfet?

    Is the company still in business that makes the plasma cutter? I would assume they could tell you the required part value. The question is why did they blow? Had to be excessive current due to what? Did you double check them with a meter to make sure they where open?

    Guess looks mean diddly squat in this situation because some component must have went bad or the device would still work. 48V to -48V = 96V potential difference, so therefor the potential for a large current to flow was present.
