    Sounds as if there is a shorted turn. If the transformer is saturating, then reducing the voltage with a Variac will drop the power dramatically. What is the transformer specification, does the supply comply? 110V transformer, 120V supply?

    One diode is NV-1S3210 and the other is NV-1N3210R so they are of opposite polarity. The symbol we see may not be an indication of polarity and it looks as if the lower picture is a mirror image. Did Kris reverse the image to show the physical connections?

    The series resistor can be set by getting the same brightness as a led fed with 20mA. Some time back, I calculated the average current from the pulse of current, this involved calculus, last used 65 years ago. I am not doing it again, it would be quicker and easier to use LTSPICE.

    If the power supply has a large ripple, then a capacitor is faulty. Look at the output waveform and see if it clips at high volumes. You will not get more output voltage than the PSU voltage. I think that more output could be obtained with a lower impedance speaker.

    It may be a SMPS with Q1 as the switching transistor. If D1 to D4 form a bridge rectifier connected to the mains, then it is a SMPS. Is it my imagination that the electrolytic capacitors have domed tops? Faulty caps could overload the transformer.
