    You get sparks (probably) because there is a capacitor in there which needs to be charged and is a very low impedance when discharged. Smoke is baaaad. It may be from many causes. I would open the unit up and take a look (and a sniff if necessary).

    I would recommend that if you have a pcb that you spray it with some sort of conformal coating on both sides. Dust and moisture can create conductive paths. Even spraying it with a clear acrylic may be sufficient.
