    I'm serious!

Read-up on tinning the solder iron tip. Sooner or later it has to be done on every iron, and it solves a lot of your problems. You clean the offending solder tip, use some sal amoniac, or whatever they recommend nowadays, and re-tin the solder tip with solder.

Why I want my old world back!

Yep, things are pretty screwed-up, and getting worse. ALL I hear at work and elsewhere is that I need to 'Value Diversity'. Like you found-out though, it's just a PC feel-good phrase. As soon as you actually mention the diversity you see (macho cultures), you're in trouble with the PC crowd...

    Early Xmas for me :)

You should have rented a moving truck, loaded-up, and used the profits for your early retirement!

Why I want my old world back!

CDRIVE, I think you're one of the few left that doesn't have some kind of politically correct 'disability'. In fact, I'm waiting for the government to classify us as a 'minority', because of our political views.

    Philips DS 9000 no power

No joke. The joke was on me. Wait a minute, if I answered my own question in the first line, maybe I'm brilliant, and just didn't realize it, .... Yeah, I'm getting actual company emails made by the management (all college kids, excuse me, *steve*), with texting short-hand in the text...

Why I want my old world back!

Next time put a solar panel on your bikes, tell her the pedals are just foot rests. If she stops you again, tell her you don't remember the prior conversation, and ask her if she's harrassing a disabled person. Maybe she just doesn't like beards. Tell her your bikes are specially designed...

    Philips DS 9000 no power

I don't know texting short-hand, what's 'ldk'? The first thing to check, is the fuse. It'll be inside the chassis. Take the cover off and look near where the power cord enters the unit. They're typically glass tubes with metal end-caps. If the fuse if blown, the very fine wire with-in the...

    Where is Electronics Point based?

China! They're brain-draining the West for new technology. Where do you think they get the ideas for all those new gadgets they're turning out? *steve* mentioned once that Ian owns the site, and he's British. I figure I'll see that corrected here, if I'm wrong.

Your first self designed circuit that worked

I got my start with Olsen Electronics and Radio Shack stores in my neighborhood. No money in it for stores nowadays I guess, but it was cheap and easy back then. First one I did myself was a simple transmistter and receiver using infrared diode they had just come out with. I was very...

    Help for parts

Next time the conveyer is down, unsolder one end of the diode, and check the part number, then you'll know.

7500EXL GENERAC GENERATOR NO AC OUT

Google the problem, I found the following, which may or may not help: Good Luck The most likely scenario here is that the battery charge rectifier (BCR) failed, allowing 12V to backfeed through the battery charge winding of your stator, causing the rotor to become demagnetized. The short...

bk e200d signal generator no 400 hz tone

There's a free service manual at: http://www.freeinfostuff.com/E200D/E-200D.htm There are just too many other things that could be wrong. A Google search says yours is a common problem with your unit, and yeah, the two caps you replaced were listed as prime suspects. Good luck

    Audio Preamplifier produces glitches (cracks)

Sounds like something is actually arcing (sparking) inside the unit. I'd open the chassis up, and look very carefully for any tell-tale burn marks on the components. (Capacitors are prime candidates) A secondary consideration is a dirty or damaged potentiometer. Turn the pots and see if...

    Double Potentiometer Joystick

I again recommend my old stand-by for looking for items like this: All Electronics Corp in California. You can check them on the web, and if you ask, they'll send you a catalog every month for free with whatever new items they've picked-up from liquidation buy-outs.

Troubles coming up with capacitor without guessing or trial and error fudging

My experience is that you can't get a reliable repeat-time that way. If you want 1 second, give or take a few seconds, it's doable. I'd look into delay lines for this. But there are plenty of other ways to do it. Just noting a cap by itself is a lousy timer.

    Buying stuff from China.

Heck, that's probably because nowadays, EVERYTHING is made in China.

It sure looks to me like that black diode is marked. Unsolder one end of it, and look at it. It looks like it starts-out with the JEDEC '1Nxxxx'

    12v push/pull solenoid

You're asking for ideas, so here's mine. All Electronics Corp in CA often lists a wide variety of end-of-production-run, parts from equipment mfgrs. I've gotten some good buys from them when there's something like what you're asking for, that I wanted. I'd check them first, then maybe some...

    A worthy venture?

Where I'm at, that house has to be inspected by the city or the county after you wire it. If you don't have an 'in' with somebody running those outfits, and you can't prove the work was done by some person (or their workers) who was LICENSED by that city or country, they order you to rip it...
