    Does it have a model number? You say you try to fix the USB connector while you're inside did you happen to see if there was a number on the PCB itself?

    It would have done it by now I think you'll be okay. Having the cheapest O'scope is better than no scope. 3 m approximately 10 ft certainly the probe could pick that up.     If you restored several of them years ago then you should have no fear in opening them up. Have you tried switching speakers right to left left to right see if the hissing persist?
