    If you give 'potentiometer' its broadest definition then it's a 'means for adjusting an EMF'. In principle you could use a tapped/variable inductor (or capacitor) to do that; but generally a variable resistor is used.

    Do you know for sure that the socket itself (rather than a pcb track) is damaged? At a pinch perhaps you could file down a standard socket.

    I think having a battery inside the ball would be dangerous. If your dog bit into the ball and ruptured the battery, or if the dog's saliva corroded the battery to a point where it leaked, the hazardous chemicals inside the battery could be be very harmful.

    :confused: I'm confused. I assume that thing in the top right of your post #14 pic is the existing rotary dimmer? I thought you were using that for the backlighting; not the indicator LEDs?

    Welcome to EP. What will you use the electromagnet for? A strong electromagnet will quickly drain a small battery.

    The '84A may have been leading edge way back in 2001, but not now :D. It's now expensive compared to much better modern PICs.

    Welcome to EP. I would have thought the silicon issue was insignificant compared to the corrosion damage to circuit tracks, wire terminations etc caused by water ingress. For garden lamps, I say go for the highest IP rating you can find/afford.

    The power supply to a microcontroller needs to be well decoupled (using low-impedance capacitors) so that stray EM fields are 'shorted to ground' and don't adversely affect the micro's performance.
