    Welcome to EP! Can you post the motor type/number? Some motors (e.g. microwave turntable) start in a random direction so would not be suitable; nor would synchronous motors be (as their speed is essentially fixed).

    For a 30pf varicap and ~6.5MHz frequency I make L= ~ 20uH. But if you're psychic you would have known that anyway :).

    Where's the rest of the circuit? What drives the input? What does the output drive? Are alleged psychic phenomena supposed to occur at specific frequencies? Are those frequencies modulated in any way?

    You get to decide the supply voltage. The load driven by the supply draws whatever current it needs.

    Welcome to EP! The screen (shield) of a MIDI cable should be grounded at one end only, so I don't see how you can use it for the 9V DC supply?

    So it looks like the blackened half is ok. The pins 3 and 4 usually connect internally to the collector and emitter of a transistor. A simple diode test won't help in testing that half.

    If you want electrical insulation of the probe you could try a few layers of polyurethane varnish (limited googling suggests it's food-safe and good up to 110C), or perhaps heat-shrink tubing (don't know if that's food-safe).

    If the AC bell supply can share a common ground with the Arduino supply the all you need is a resistor and zener diode to act as a voltage divider-cum-regulator.

    If you don't use the phone at all within a set period (6 months?) the prepaid credit is forfeit ;). Do you have good mobile phone coverage in the trap location (I have visions of the location being somewhere remote with not a cell phone tower for hundreds of miles)?

    Use the diode test (or Ohms test) function of a DMM. You should see a difference in reading when you swap the probes over, if the diode is neither shorted nor open circuit.
