    You need a voltage regulator to give the fan a nice steady 12V. A 7812 is the simplest solution.

    One on the problems with just using a capacitor is that you need to charge it when power is applied and this may require significant current. Is power completely removed? Could you use the 230vac that is switched to power (say) a small USB charger to provide power to hold the SSR on?

    Yeah, just build a low power fm transmitter and use a normal fm radio. Not necessarily legal, depending where you are, but simple.

    Write wrap wire is easily obtainable. The tools are available if you know where to look. The sockets after becoming more and more rare. If you've got the stuff, go for it. If you were starting out I'd probably not recommend it.
