Sounds like good advice from someone with questionable skills. I think you've graduated to skilled level. :) Chris

GPS NMEA, Failover Circuit upgrade attempt.

As a side note the data sheet I have for the Max232 is a TI publication. It doesn't cover the internals in detail. Hence no view of those 400K pullup resistors. I just downloaded a Maxim version and sure enough, there they are! Chris

N Channel JFET Testing in ESR Tester

Well its author/designer calls it a Transistor Tester, which it is and as he modestly states " and a little more". Personally, I think it qualifies as an invention because I know of no other device that automatically finds the pinout and device family of 2 & 3 pin solid state devices. At least...

Sorry, not with my old eyes. Even when I enlarge them they're just a blur. Perhaps a skilled member with younger eyes will chime in here. Chris

Trying to make a transistor cancel another transistor

Typically, it doesn't but it's crucial in setting a base line that will dictate component values. For a example consider a simple circuit consisting of a Battery (Vbat), Resistor (R1) and an LED (Led1). If Led1 is to operate at 20mA the value of R1 will be dependent on the value of Vbat as well...

MDF! Your photos belie that awful truth. Besides using a CNC laser cutter did you also photoshop those pix? :p BTW, I've rescinded your master wood worker status because using CNC and Lasers doesn't get you into that fraternity. Though using MDF and actually making that awful stuff look...

N Channel JFET Testing in ESR Tester

The history of the device is included in the PDF file I posted. The author released his schematics and source code to SourceForge as freeware years ago. He's also well aware of the existence of the many Chinese clones. Chris

Is it possible the Chinese sent you a mismarked chip. IE it's actually a MAX3232EPE clone? Chris

    Playing with valves

Steve, I found my way here via the AudioGuru topic I started. How the hell have I missed this topic? Like you I've never done any design work with tubes but I serviced boat loads of them back in the day. I did build quite a few vacuum tube designs from the ARRL Handbooks but that doesn't qualify...

N Channel JFET Testing in ESR Tester

Thanks for your observations Bob. What do you think is a reasonable timeline that these testers will properly identify JFETs. I'm betting within a year. Chris

Surely you're playing with me. You know you're being on your best behavior. Mentioning a 741 to you is like waving a crucifix in front of Dracula. :) Chris

The models I have were both purchased on Ebay. The first one (MK-168) came enclosed in a plastic case that includes a 9V jack to power it off a wallwart if desired. It's LCD is an older model (smaller) with no graphic capabilities that uses ASCII art to depict components. This model is reporting...

Unlike someone else we know (who's also knowledgeable) but is a word minimalist, who sometimes (most times) blurts out crap, AG is very helpful. He just doesn't have any tolerance for questions that he may consider 'Too Damn Basic'. Sometimes you have to prod the man to give it up . I think...

N Channel JFET Testing in ESR Tester

Here's some reading for you. In particular find "Measurement of JFET and D-MOS transistors" in the idex. BTW the author uses the word "deferred" when speaking of the Drain - Source terminals of the JFET. I believe it should read "differentiated". Chris

N Channel JFET Testing in ESR Tester

SteveK, welcome to EP. I don't know why you call it an "ESR" (Equivalent Series Resistance) Tester. That's only one parameter that these devices test. I own two (Atmega uC based) Component Testers. They've been evolving over the years. Unfortunately the two versions I have both report an MPF102...

12v 3amp battery charger lead acid

That makes a hell of a lot more sense. The way Colin wrote that is misleading,.. to say the least. That said a filter cap is a superfluous component for a basic lead acid battery charger that Colin's describing. On that note I wouldn't use a resistor as he described either. An incandescent lamp...
