    I am going to replace that suspect cap (chartreuse) and diode (D4). Will replace mystery diode D4 (marked SM 53) with a 1N4004 or 1N4007 and see if the expensive smoke escapes:D

    and yes, I do get continuity between the legs of blue Cap (C6) and the inside legs of the diodes closest to blue cap.

    St. Edd Chartreuse: 100uf 25V 85C SR My cheap chinese ESR tester chucks this one out and just says 0.34ohm Orange: 100uf 25V 85C SR ESR = 0.37 Blue: 100uf 25V 85C SR ESR =0.34 U2 = R30 Thanks Still trying to decipher the rest of your info

    Thanks for all the tips guys, much appreciated. My soldering/desoldering skills have already improved dramatically. But lol, I had always regarded those soldering guns as toys, just shows how wrong you can be be. Now to find one in South Africa, sigh!

    If it will help this board blew the blue mov and the resistor next to it which I replaced but the board was still dead.

    Sir 73's de Edd You are a marvel Sir. Thank you. I think it will be a lot easier to figure out this diode with a photo which shows this diode as one of a set of 4. You can see them there where it shows D4 and D8

    I hope so. I just get the feeling that PCB solder these days is a lot tougher than 20 years ago. Now I sometimes have to turn my soldering station up to 450 (the highest that it can go), where damage to the pcb is just about a certainty, and I still battle to flow the solder. What's next -...

    I'm not trying to hijack this thread but coincidentally I'm also sitting with a smd diode with the the same manufacturers logo that I'm trying to id. Mine is a SM 53 6. Would appreciate finding out who the manufacturer is
