Are the little 150W tungsten halogen floodlights as common in the USA
(and elsewhere) as they are in the UK? I'm designing some new projects
for my website and just want to make sure people can pick the materials
up easily enough. The ones I'm enquiring about are the miniature
version of the more common 500W outdoor floodlights that are generally
dirt cheap. (And therefore excellent for hacking into LED floodlights.)

This here's a big country, so we like our lights big too. I'd reckon the
300 watter is more common, unless a 500 would give us a shot into the
neighbor's bedroom.

The floodlights are not as common here because of the widespread use of PAR
lamps that can fit into simple screw sockets for outdoor floodlighting. The
PAR lamp is weatherproof; the socket is cheap and widely sold. Typical
application - over the garage door. A 90 watt halogen PAR lamp is common
and has replaced the older 150 watt conventional PAR.

The floodlight fixtures are available though. They use 100, 150, 200 or 300
watt lamps (rarely 500 watt these days); but the feeling seems to be that
they are more complicated and expensive somehow. The consumer seems to
understand PAR lamps.

Hi Clive,

The linear lamp floods are available from Home Depot in the States for
a few dollars, in 150W. I think you'll find them on their website. If
not, let me know and I'll get a pic from their paper catalog next time
I'm up there. Should be mid-September.

T.

Yeah, I work at a Home Depot in Sacramento, specifically in the
Electrical dept, where all the bulbs are. We have em. I don't know how
much they are though. Let me know exactly what you are looking for and
I'll check it out next time I'm there, on Saturday.

Thanks for confirming their availability guys. I'm designing some new
projects for my site and wanted to make sure people could get the
components wherever they are in the world. (Particularly Europe and
America)

One interesting thing I've noted is that I seem top get a lot of emails
from Americans saying they can't get the little MR16 downlighter frames.
I thought these were popular around the world. The MR16 lamps are the
little 2" diameter 12v dichroic downlighters. (Also available in 110
and 240V these days.)
