Can't seem to find a concise answer to this question...

Do you have to manually update your yourblog.xml header dates each and
every time you update the linked content?

Or are the xml readers swift enough to check the <item><link> to see if
a newer update has actually happened?

I suggest making the engineers bet and automating the update.
