Then your ranging sonar does not care if the signal is a sinewave or is clipped into a squarewave. So amplitude does not matter unless it is too small and needs more amplification.

What DC voltages do you have available to power the circuit?

I am working with +/- 12 volts. And yeah, you are right. I don't really need this gain. But for whatever reason I really care to do this. I am just trying to figure out a clever way.

With +/-12 V you can do just about anything. The compressor circuits above will work, but a comparator would be more simple to design and build, and easier to test.
