Asking about principle of operation of battery charging circuit

I have a schematic of battery charging circuit. But I dont know how it operate. Could you plz explain to me the principle of operation of this circuit in detail.

Nobody uses an old fashioned toxic Ni-Cad battery anymore.

Your schematic has the polarities upside down. Usually positive is at the top and negative is at the bottom.
