Company employee physicals

I just got a new job with a large company. On the first day of work I have
been told I will be given a physical examination by the company's medical department.
This has me a bit worried.

What should I expect?

Is it common for companies to have their own medical departments?

Are they providing you life insurance? If so, an HIV test may be required
by the insurance company.

You should have been told before you were recruited.

It varies tremendously, from just checking that you are alive to
astronaut level. Ask your Human Resources people, and ask why you
weren't told about it before.

Quite common in Europe. A nurse or two, for trauma mostly, plus a
visiting medic.

Expect a physical. As you aren't paying for this, make sure they make
a good job of it, and ask for a copy of the results.

In the US, probably will include drug tests. Read what you signed
when you were hired. You probably agreed to be tested for anything
considered "in the best interests of the company".

What are you worried about? If this is a problem for you then seek
employment elsewhere- no one is forcing you to do anything. Your post
has nothing to with electronic design BTW- so get lost.

Here in the UK I had to have a medical for a job with a small company, and
when I worked for a university they required a letter from my doctor.
Application forms generally ask about one's health. Large companies here
usually have their own medical departments.

Your reply has nothing to do with electronic design. Why don't you heed
your own advice and get lost?

You remind me of that horror story with the doctor so-and-so and his
island full of these humanoid animal experiments run amuck. If you think
you can live in intimate proximity to all those pigs down there in North
Carolina- breathing airborne saliva vapor, drinking water and eating
food products heavily contaminated with their fecal matter, and
innumerable other means by which your genome is heavily contaminated
with rogue porcine nucleotides, and not actually turn into one
yourself....then you're dreaming.

I'm glad to see that you finally worked a smattering of electronics
design related material into your reply so that it would meet the mandate of
this news group.

The Island of Doctor Moreau, by HG Wells, IIRC. The point that escapes
many is that the chimeras were much more benign that the humans.

So are most wild animals. The foxes behind my office have a better
family structure than most human families I have seen. And they don't
send around flames.

Hi Max,

Sometimes they want to verify pre-existing conditions for insurance
purposes.

Other times it is important for the job. Before I was allowed on a
pretty scary oil exploration job I had to have a very thorough physical
with cycle stress test and all. For pretty good reason since they don't
want anyone to croak out there.

Which country is the job in?

Regards, Joerg

And they don't respond to obvious trolls posting through an anonymous

The anonymous remailer lists this post as "sewer-output" in Path-
couldn't be more apt...

And before that, Fred responded to an obvious troll thusly....

Must be another one of me out there. I'm in North Carolina and we're
still waiting for the remnants of Charlie to show up.

I used to live near Miami about an eon or two ago.

It was just my feeble mind.

I mixed up you and Peter O. Brackett as to where you lived.

Peter is the one in Indialantic By-the-Sea, FL.

Wonder how he fared thru the storm?
