Since I got so much help here, i thought I would post a brief video of a completed project. Make sure you turn up your speakers to hear the sound.

I did this on an inexpensive guitar that I own. The circuit, which is run via a 555 timer, is on a small circuit board and is placed in the back of the guitar, under a cover which screws off to hide the electronics. I wired it to the existing toggle switch for the pickups.

This guitar also has a separate circuit I made, which is triggered by a small push button on the back of the head of the guitar (where the machine. heads are). When i push that button, a red laser is triggered, which is sitting at the very end of the head of the guitar (on the inside- so that people can't see it). This enables me to use my guitar as a laser pointer during a performance. So, if you want to point to someone or something (without shining it in. their eyes of course), you can do so.
