but that is way too big compared to the item in question which is more along the lines of a normal looking resistor

Interesting that sony uses RA for resistor array? Strange that the Ops circuit uses this for a single resistor.

OK another fusible resistor and its symbol
this one just happens to use square ends rather than rounded
That all depends on the designers background and country

I have no problem whatsoever believing that the resistor symbol as shown in the OP is a fusible resistor

It's an obsolete JIS (Japanese Industrial Standards) symbol for a thermistor.

a thermistor usually has a dot in the drawn "enclosure" beside the resistor symbol
that variation is still common

ohhh the wonderful world of non standardisation of circuit symbols :rolleyes:
