Panasonic DMR-EZ48V

My long-serving DVD / VCR recorder is failing. When the DVD drive loads disk, the head searches 4 times at one speed, then one more time at a slower speed, then it stops and puts up an error message to check the disk. Same for all disks, commercial DVDs, discs recorded on this drive, whatever.

Does anyone have any experience with this failure mode, or know of a good A/V repair forum?

Thanks.

Things to check:
- pickup disc, possibly clean it with a swap soaked in alcohol
- lens, same remedy, be veeeery careful, the lens is mouned on a moving carrier and can easily be damaged
- laser current, you'll need a service manual that tells you where and how to adjust the current. Lackling a manual you may try to locate a potentiometer near the laser unit and turn it in either direction. Without a manual the risk of additional damage is rather high :(
- last not least: wiring. it is not uncommon for those FFC / FPC cables to come lose from the connector.
