I am looking for some kind of fixture/lamp to simulate a fire or flame
effect.
I need to light a space that is about 12 inches by 12 inches and will be
behind some kind of grate. Need it to look like there are flames behind
the grate. Any ideas?

video projector? could you back-project the (moving) flames image on
to 12x12 screen?

Do a search for silk flame.

There are a variety of modules available that incorporate the silk,
lamps and fan already.
