Hello, Thanks for letting me join your forum, I wonder if you can help me, I buy / collect fishing bite alarms and when I get one that I have not seen before I try to find out how they work, I am always in the shed Happy days, Anyway most are pretty simple things using reed or tilt switch's but some are on a circuit board which is way beyond me,I have one that has me baffled, (I will see if I can put a picturs on here)..basically there is a hollow stainless steel rod about 18" high, from the box with all the bits and the battery in it there is just 2 wires that go into this thin rod, there is a plastic sleeve (it is called a monkey climber to fisherman ) in this sleeve which can be pulled up and down this rod is 2 small magnets, when it moves up or down this rod a alarm sounds and when it stops moving the alarm stops, I thought it might be something to do with electro magnatism so I have been looking on u tube, I have also bought some books like electronics for dummys and some others, I am pulling my hair out trying to suss it out , can anyone help please

If it has magnets that move up or down, I think it’s safe to say a Reed switch is in there. Or a magnetic hall sensor.
Something like this?

Thank you for replying ,I did think that it could be reed switch but that would only work if the magnet was right next to it, this can work anywhere on the 18" rod, how does a hall sensor work ?

I will let you read rather than me type. Here is a good explanation.
But these also need the magnet/s in the vicinity like the Reed switch.

Well no pics I'm afraid ,it said there was a error, I have just read the hall effect thing and will have to keep re reading it to see if it could be what I am looking for..........Another alarm question if you don't mind..I have a alarm that has a remote receiver with it, the alarm works (led's come on ) and the receiver turns on (led's and buzzer sounds) but either the alarm is not sending the signal or the receiver is not receiving it,any thoughts please?

To rule out RF interference, take it out of the area first. Secondly, are the transmitter and receiver paired?, or definitely supposed to work together?. It has been known to mix up units.
You need to resize your pictures to 300kB. Use an online editor or software like paint.

I have another question as well, if you don't mind, I have made some bite alarms that I am quite happy with , they are very simple things and work on magnets and reed switch's etc with then will operate a led and a buzzer, I now want to make them remote, so I can have a receiver in my pocket, I read up on it and bought some cheap 433 transmitter and receivers,,,,,,,,,I have spent hours on u tube looking at videos of how to wire them up, they look simple to wire up but although I have done it the same as the video the led on the receiver lights up on its own when it is only supposed to light up when it gets the signal from the transmitter, Please if anyone else can help me move a bit further as I am on the verge of packing it all up, I lay there at night thinking about all the problems mentioned. Thanks

Bet you wish you had not replied now , I will leave the pictures as I have no idea what a online editor or paint means.......the bite alarms have been tryed in the back garden and in the house, I dont know if it is the right receiver as they came together when I bought them, (I bought them as not working so I could take them apart and see if I could fix them ) Thanks

online editor or paint

They are either an online web site (online editor..........edit online....on the web) where you can resize your photos or.......
Paint, which is a program on every Windows operated computer where one can do the same.

I'd never heard of a fish bite alarm and became curious........first video up was in reference to one for $2....hardly worth the effort of DIY I'd say.
Even then, an electronic device to replace a tin can with a rock in it......?????????

Some people collect match box's, each to their own, if it makes them happy

Hello again, Can you help me again please before I go mad, I have watched and re watched loads of videos on u tube on 433 transmitters and receivers, I want to put these into my homemade bite alarms to made them work remotely , I would be quite happy if I could get them to send a signal just up to say 25 feet, I have bought about 6 pairs of these things and have spent hours and hours wiring them up (this is before putting into my bite alarms) I thought if I could just get them working first and then it should be simple to incorparate them into my alarms,on the videos it is a 3 minute job and press the switch and happy days the led or buzzer works...........I have bought 2 more books on simple electronics etc and still am none the wiser, any help please, other than give up, which is what I am about to do ,Thanks

Can you please link to these videos?.
In all videos, where you can thumb up/ thumb down ( like/ dislike) a video, there is also an arrow (share). Simply press the arrow/share icon and a list will appear. Choose to ‘copy link’. Now come back here and either use the ‘right click and paste’ with your mouse or use the ‘link’ icon under the capital ‘B’ at the top of this text window. When ‘link’ is open, right click and paste into it. That’s it, simple.
