Personally, I think it is better for a forum to automatically email reply notices and such unless you opt out.

And right after I posted that I received a Monthly Update email from the forum. That kind of email should definitely be opt in or better yet not sent at all because they will lead to some people unsubscribing from all forum emails, including ones for replies, PMs &c.
