That is correct.
A light emitting diode wouldn’t be any good for an inductive spike from a motor. But a 1N4*** series might be.

In some cases there are even Ultra Fast diodes needed.
Of course the diode must witstand the voltage and current peaks.

In other cases it may be better to use a MOV rather than a diode.
