HDMI to DVI-D .... Will it work?

I have a computer monitor that only has a DVI-D input.

If I get a DVD player with HDMI output and use a HDMI to DVI-D cable will it
work?

Or do these types of cables only work one way?

Yes,

The only difference between those 2 connectors is that HDMI has integrated
digital audio whereas the other has no provision for audio.

It will be compatible from an electrical point of view as DVI and HDMI are
electrically the same (TMDS).
But it may not actually work in practice, as it comes down to the monitor
being able to support the required formats and encoding.
The monitor will be expecting RGB, so if your DVD player supports RGB output
over HDMI then it may just work. DVD players usually output YcrCb by
default, and your monitor may not handle this.

No, they are just wired straight through.

Along this same line...your monitors' DVI input MUST support HDCP or you
will not see any image from a cable box or Blu-ray DVD player because they
are encrypted. HDCP is High bandwidth Digital Copy Protection. It is there
to prevent digital copies from being made. As above stated, the YcrCB
inputs
and the VGA inputs were designed before HDCP but you will have to split
the audio off as these inputs do not include audio.
