high IR led power?

Hello,

I would have a quick question about the TSAL6100 IR LED:

In the absolute maximum ratings section of the data sheet, it says that this led's forwards current is 100ma. But then it also says that the peak forwards current is 200ma.

My question is, if I am pulsing this LED at 38Khz, can I go beyond the 100 ma maximum current. Like for example 150ma?

And if not are there any LEDs with the same characteristics that can draw
150ma....?

150mA pulsed at 38kHz is fine, as this gives an average current of 75mA.

You need to be very careful that your LED is never left on though, otherwise you may drastically shorten its life. For instance, if you are using a microcontroller, make sure that a rest condition does not allow the LED to be on.

Domestic IR remotes usually give a 25% or 33% duty cycle to the 38kHz transmit signal to improve battery life.

I have seen IR LEDs that allow 1A peak current (forget what the steady current was). The more current that you can pulse through the LED the greater the range that you will acheive.

Using two LEDs to get greater range is common too.
