Call up your motor distributor, and ask for a 12V
motor in the same size and power as the existing motor.
You might want to specify AC or DC. Current will go up
by about 10x. Please ask a real engineer for help before
placing the order.

It's not at all a problem with your English we're facing here, but
with your complete ignorance regarding the subject you're talking
about.

You never seem to have grasped how usenet works, either. I'd say your
question is off-topic in every single one of the 6 newsgroups you
crossposted it to.

The answer to your question is: you can't, period. Odds are you'ld
kill yourself doing anything that involves 220 AC lines. Somebody
else might be able to do it for you, though. So please acquire
professional assistance.

You want to rewind a 220vac motor to run on 12vdc?
Or just run a 220vac motor on 12vdc?

The first is virtually impossible, or at best a very expensive waste of
time.
The second requires an inverter with a 12vdc input and a 220vac output. Not
too hard to find in european coumtries.

Basically I would follow Bryan's recommendation. Take the specs of the
220V AC motor to your motor distributor. However if you are asking how
to run a 220V AC motor (system) off a 12V DC supply then I would be
looking at 12 volt to 220V AC inverters.

Ken.

Except for the fact the original message was posted from the Western
US, I would have guesed 220V 50Hz motors used in Europe and Hong Kong.
Most 220 (only) motors are bigger than 1/2 HP (there are always
special exceptions <g>). This project would need a huge battery array
to support the start current.

Basically a shunt commutating motor runs off AC as good as DC. If you
connect your vacuum cleaner to e.g. a 24V DC source it might just
turn. (not very hard though)
Theoretically winding down the rotor and rewinding it with a larger
diameter wire should suffice.
Most people do not have *that* amount of spare time however:)

A RC Model shop may be a good place to pick up a purpose built
hi-performance DC motor.

I think the answers are over-complicated in Britain we have 22V AC power
(not 110V) so you just need a standard power adaptor (like one you use to
charge a mobile (cell) phone but with 12V DC output and make sure the power
adaptor has at least 100mA (measure of current) MORE than the motor is rated
at (to prevent overheating of power adaptor)

I might be wrong but this is how I interpreted the question:

How can I run a 12V DC motor from mains power?

Hey Mr. Hans-Berky-bobber, try and be a little civil to someone that is
asking for help. If you can't help, move on. no one wants or needs your
sarcasm. if you think it made you look intelligent well...

you know the old adage about keep you mouth closed and let them think you a

If you've been reading the other replies, there are two ways you can
go here.

1) You can physically remove the 220V motor that you have and replace
it with a 12V motor of the same size. This is like the way you
"change" a tire. Once you've done this replacement, you'll need much
larger power wires, assuming you want the same torque.

2) You can't. A 220V AC motor, generally can't be changed into a 12V
motor, without massive internal changes. The work involved would mean
that choice 1) would be better.

The last time I tried something like this, I was around 7 years old,
and I tried to plug my 3V Erector set motor into a 110V outlet. The
motor never worked again.

If the Motor uses 1 Phase you can use a inverter (12VDC->220VAC). But if
your Engine uses 3 Phases, you need a inverter (12VDC->220VAC). and a
frequency converter (220VAC). But if the engine has a higher
achievement, it becomes surely too expensive in these 2 kinds and it is
better you change to a type with 220VAC.
