I simulated it and it does work.

Dorke is right. The simplest way t osee it is to look at the arrows in the transistor and the LED. They point from + to - for bipolar transistors.

Yes, he is right, I now see that I did have the emitter and collector reversed. I was looking at his revised drawing, and of course, they were correct there
