How to ensure it is working

Have you used GP2Y0D21YK0F? It's the distance sensor. How can I be sure that it is working? If there is no feedback, is the signal output voltage 0?

The D version has digital output with a detection border of 24 +/- 3 cm:

Output on the digital unit shows pullup resistor on the output so I'd imagine as it detects a surface within range to output would go low.
