What is an Integrated Circuit? What are the advantages of ICs over discrete component circuits?

I am amazed that, "a modern chip may have several billion transistors in an area the size of a human fingernail."
Try doing that with discrete components.

For someone that came through the valve era then the descrete transistor era where if you wanted a simple flip flop it would consist of transistors, resistors, capacitors etc, so the IC was a sort of blessing.
