Vertical output on my JVC TV AV-32720 is intermittent. Whacking the set
clears it up. I understand cold solder joints on the vertical output IC are
common.

Can anyone give me the IC number to help id the chip? I assume it's on a
heat sink close to the defection yoke (haven't opened the set yet).

Any other common causes of vertical problems for this set?

Thanks!

well.... Hank...... it sounds like you have a handle on the problem and the
location of the IC. Good luck on your repair.
If you still can't fix it you might want to whack it again, but harder.

Hank,
It will usually be labeled IC401
Most likely a LA7838

Good Luck,

The vertical output IC is usually a single inline package on a heat
sink. It's a good idea to carefully check the entire main board for bad
solder connections any time it's being worked on. Pay particular
attention to areas that look discolored from heat and parts on heat
sinks. When in doubt, resolder it.

Resoldered the LA78XX and the set works fine. Thanks to Bill Jr. and Andy!

Also replace that 100uF 35V electrolytic capacitor, the positive side
of cap is hung off the cathode side of diode near that vertical IC.
This prevent future blown parts, that cap is slowly dried up by the
intense heat from undersized vertical heatsink.

Cheers,
