We had a load get terribly out of balance today during the spin cycle.
When I went to open the lid I was very surprised that the motor and
basket kept right on spinning. On other cycles the machine shuts down so
the lid switch should be working. Is this a malfunction? I always
thought that opening the lid during a spin would shut down the motor.

When that happened to me six months ago, the lid interlock switch got
jarred and broken. In my case it opened, in your case it may have
shorted or just gotten moved so that the lever on the microswitch is
jammed on something.

Maybe that lid switch has multiple contacts or something similar is
going on.
In its current condition it sounds dangerous - I believe a spinning
washing machine tub can rip off an arm.
You must find the problem and correct it for safety's sake!
