I need a suitable replacement for this transistor, I guess it is a darlington.

Thanks ante, I won't have any trouble getting hold of either of those transistors. Yes ante those articles are just what I need, I think that the old technology, is the best place to start and easier to learn from. After all its usually the old technology, that new is built on 
. I'm trying to modify the regulator the one I posted above, for my application. I will posted it at (Schematics Variable current 12v 60A to 0A) and try to explain how I want it to work . At the moment I don't know how wrong I have got it, or if there is even anything right with it. But I'm just having ago ;D.
