need help with transistor 502

i'm having some problems with my sony NiMH charger. the charger has a TO-220 package transistor with the number 502 on it. i cannot find out if it is a BJT or a MOSFET. its a fairchild  make i think but could not find anything on the fairchild website. can any one help me with this and get me its datasheet. the transistor is used to supply the current to the batteries and is connected to a LM358 IC.

LM358 is an Amplifier. the datasheet has a diagram of a current limiter.

thanks for ur help, i finally found that the transistor was a TIP42C, the number was covered with black ink. It uses a TOP222Y offline PWM switch in the power supply.i checked its datasheet which says its a 15-25W power device. can it provide enougt power to quick charge 4 2300mAh NiMH cells. i doubt these sony guys.
