MP,
I have heard that Win98, 2nd edition, would eat my 2G hard-drive (with many files) for lunch and again for dinner.

Audioguru,

Are you really using a 486 and a 2G hard drive?
I have 600Mhz PIII and 80G and I constantly get bullied for it! Like

Yes, Ante.
This is my 1st and only computer, and it is a 486DX/100. I upgraded to the last 486 chip that Intel made, with Pentium features such as bigger L1 cache memory. The CPU chip and its 5V to 3.3V regulator are fitted to a daughter board that is the same size as an older 486 DIL chip. My computer doesn't even have any L2 cache memory.
My Compaq computer is all-in-one, like a Mac, so I couldn't upgrade the motherboard.
My cable ISP has announced "Extreme Hi-speed" at 5MB/sec., but I'm happy (except for jerky video) with my 486 and its 1MB/sec download speed.

audioguru,

Is that 1Mbit or 1Mbyte download speed?

Ante ::)

Ante,
It depends on whom you ask. The marketing department of my ISP says one thing, and Microsoft and Bandwidthplace.com say another.
But it is very, very fast.

Hey guys!
When I say USING it, I mean it!
My 486 is used every day on the internet (cable) for surfing, e-mail, ordering parts and for word-processing invoices, etc. It is reliably running Windows 98, 1st Edition ......

.....Any other challengers?
I would not exactly call this reliable, noting the above comments... You have also wasted mixos time for a problem that does not exist on this system.

It seems you have two choices:
Upgrade or stop complaining.

MP,
Since my computer doesn't have this problem on any other web-site, then I complained, here.
I thought that the problem, here, could be fixed, here.
I didn't think that my computer had anything to do with it, like the errors that we get, here and only, here.
Now I know where it is not very reliable.

Many other web-forums work properly for me, why not this one?

audioguru,

So you have time left to visit any other web site after your daily posting on this one?

Ante,
Yes, of course. I also notice that you do too.
It all started when I asked a forum where I can buy epoxy-fibreglass Veroboard, like was available in the good old days (the blue stuff), since my Chinese supplier recently stopped carrying his very good copy.
Sincerely,
Mega-post goal, Audioguru

P.S. I'm still waiting for my original coin, soldered-in, bios/clock, lithium battery to die, so I can replace it (I have one), then my computer will be good for another 10 years.
I'm going to get a demo of that Extreme Hi-speed cable modem.

audioguru,

I spend an average of 1h a day on the net but often in 15-20 min sessions. Do you mean that the blue stuff is no longer manufactured? I use it all the time and I have some stock left but not much. It

Ante,
I can get only phenolic Veroboard in North America, it is the cheap, tan-coloured stuff that warps and breaks. Veroboard is now a new company, no longer part of Vero Industries. I think that it is called Verotech. Their web-site is nearly empty.

I connect my 486 to my router with an ISA-slot, 1/10 LAN card. The router connects to the cable modem.
