Thanks for the hints about the programs and docs on the utilities disk. I hadn't spotted those yet.
For now, I give up on GPIB. If only someone had the manual for the IEEE upgrade kit...

I just took a look at the datasheet and manuals, and I did not see an official IEEE upgrade. Yet, the SCPI manual was produced and it is full of IEEE commands. It seems there is a disconnect. What i would have liked is if the SCPI manual had more example comments like "this is how you initialize the logic analyzer for a 10 channel capture" I just could not get it to function. But, now i have 2 analyzers because one was at a surplus store for $60 and i could not pass it up. I might give the IEEE a try again this weekend and see if i can do a basic initialize.

The operating manual page 1.2 says "All instruments can be remotely controlled via IEEE...".
And further down: "The IEEE communication option may be factory installed ... or can be ordered as separate option (... PF 8653/20)".
I assumed the number refers to an upgrade kit.
And first sentence in the SCPI programming manual:
"The PF8653/20 and PF8653/30 remote programming options
allow you to program and control a PM 3580/PM 3585 Logic
Analyzer via respectively an IEEE-488.2 and RS-232 interface.
These options require the PF8690/xx Version 2.0 system
software being installed."

Now, is the system software the one on the software disks or the firmware in the EPROMs?

Do you get a response to *IDN? via your IEEE interface?
Somewhere I read that there was an IEEE upgrade kit by Philips. I wonder if this included a set of new EPROMs.
I'm aware of the Util disk. I used it after replacing the battery. The mouse is working fine. Unfortunately, there is only one RS232 interface, so I can either use the mouse or communicate via RS232, but not both at the same time. Therefore, GPIB would be very nice.
Communication via RS232 works fine though, but rather slow at max 19k2 baud.
Btw, I wrote a windows software to convert screen dumps to bmp or jpg. Might be useful for others, too, see attached result.
I finally had some time this weekend to hook my logic analyzer up to the IEEE port and try it again. I was able to get the CLR command to work, but the IDN? Returned nothing. I dug into the error and it said, device not listening. I have 2 logic analyzers (I found 1 96 channel one for $60 with cables, pods and clips. How could I pass that up????) and I will try the other one this weekend. One thing was strange though. In the IO config, it did allow me to select IEEE as an option and config the port number. So, something is preventing it from listening. I searched the other screens for places to configure it and came up blank. Also, I am running the latest firmware that has the mouse support.

So, I am starting to think you are correct and a rom upgrade might be necessary to get IEEE commands. I will let you know what my second analyzer does soon.

Thanks for coming back on this. Exactly the same behavior as here. I can also configure IEEE but the device is not listening. I monitored GPIB traffic with a second logic analyzer. Curious to hear how your second box will behave.
