No. If the problem is 'just' no sound i.e. picture ok, then check the 'mute' button on the handset then any headphone sockets, the loudspeaker and then the audio output component (IC) in that order.

Anything in the on-screen menu(s) that could be changed?

Can you get audio from an external source (i.e. SCART or s-Video/audio signals)?

What form does the cable signal take? Modulated RF, composite video/audio, HDMI? Can you feed it to a different receiver to prove its output is ok?

HDMI cable ok? (check by replacement). Is this a 'new' arrangement for your cable set/TV or is it an existing arrangement that has stopped working?

the person who had it had it connected to cable. It has worked for a few years and then they had no sound. They got a new tv and gave me this one to tinker with.It says in the manual hat under sources there should be a tv setting to scan channels from a antenna.trying to scan channels from an antenna but not sure what to set the source on.Like I said earlier,I connected the fire stick through the HDMI input and everything works

The channel scanning is for the connection of an external antenna receiving locally transmitted free-to-air terrestrial TV. It won't work with a cable device that 'does all that for you' and just outputs the channels via the HDMI cable.

If audio works through the fire stick then it should work through the other HDMI input (try swapping the firestick to the other HDMI input to see if there is an HDMI channel problem).

Is your cable set programmed for the correct audio output?

Good - then there's nothing wrong with the HDMI input as anything you connect there will (or should) deliver audio out through the speakers therefore the lack of audio must be from the SOURCE device.

TV's usually have a built-in mute function when 'off-station' but if you don't get audio from an ON AIR channel then the fault is in the terrestrial TV receiving section but you should still be able to use a cable box (assuming its output is via HDMI and not into the TV aerial socket).
