PWM fan speed controller.

I've got a projector mounted in a funny location and I need to cool it with an auxiliary fan.

If I use a PC case fan with a Zalman or similar speed controller and a 12v supply will that work?

I know the speed controller outputs PWM to the fan, but the controller also has a 3 pin input. Can I ignore the 3rd pin and just give it 12v?

the 3rd pin is usually there to calculate rpm so rather than an input it outputs 1 pulse every rotation.
