Hybrid parameters are used when other parameters don't work so well.
The h param works well with the pi and T transistor model because
input and output resistances are mixed with voltage to current
relations which is why they were called "hybrid" in the first place.

And a reason that they are often more popular than other
parameters is their relative ease of measurement. Certain ports
are made short or open circuit to AC during testing which is
quite easy to do.
