2 years or so after planting this, I get a single fruit before the plant dies. Is it really worth the effort?

They do taste a lot better than store-bought ones though. Also, it's not green!

Not if you'd wanted to make a living out of that. But the great taste is a good awad, isn't it?

When I was 5 years old, my family stopped in Hawaii on the way back from Okinawa where my father had been stationed. Apparently the only thing I was interested in seeing was where the pineapples grow, and the driver who was taking us on a tour accommodated me.

I guess it depends on where you are and how much effort you put into it. About 10 years ago, I spent part of a year in Costa Rica where you could buy a fresh ripe pineapple for about 0.5 USD; so no, I wouldn't have put that much bother into it.

I am in a place that pineapples "can't" be grown. Two years of growth here is probably equivalent of a couple of months growth in a more ideal climate.

The fruit itself was probably growing for 6 months.

Yes, it's worth it. That sad little pineapple had to overcome a lot of adversity to arrive in this world.

You do realise you only get one fruit per plant ( hope I'm not stating something you already knew ?)

when the pineapple is ready to harvest ( where the top green crown is still green)
you slice it off and plant it to get the next pineapple
and 2 years is the typical growing time

It's kinda like banana palms .... once the bunch of bananas at the top of the palm is ready to harvest, you cut the palm down at the base.
The new palm will grow from that base for the next lot of fruit

It seems that pineapples (and avocados) prefer coastal, or humid climates over dryer, inland escarpments.
Originally from Durban (coastal city), we were spoiled with massive, juicy fruit produce.
Now living inland (near Johannesburg), the pineapples and avo's have shrunk in size.
Certain grocery markets and retail stores do sell hothouse-grown full-size specimens, though.
