My Ford factory-installed car radios use a rotary optical encoder only for the volume control, but it somehow "remembers" that last setting when I push it to turn the radio off or on. All other functions, IIRC, are via push-buttons. For tuning I get a choice of scan, search, and a multi-band set of five or six preset buttons (two bands for FM and one for AM, the band selected by still another push-button). Search mode is good for finding weak signals in the middle of nowhere that are "passed by" using the scan button, which searches for strong signals only. I sometimes wish the car radios had a "real" tuning knob, although I would have to take my eyes off the road while driving in order to tune it to a particular frequency. Wife doesn't like it when I take my eyes off the road at my age.
