Hello all knowledgeable people!

I have tested my electric fence energiser with a fence tester in isolation of the fenceline so using the tester on the earth and live of the energiser itself and am getting 1.8/1.9kv reading. it should be around 6kv so something is not quite right!
I have taken the back off and nothing is obviously loose, perished, burnt or looking obviously a miss to the uneducated persons eye. It would cost me 90.00 to send the unit off to be fixed, money i just don't have and as my sheep are merrily ruining my fenceline as i type I really need to find the fault and get it repaired pronto!
And help with finding the fault explained in non electrical speak gratefully received. IMG_0785.JPG IMG_0783.JPG IMG_0782.JPG

I would check the voltage on the 3.3μF capacitor. I expect it should be about 400V. Do not kill yourself:).
There is another component nearby with a yellowish patch, possibly just a trick of the light.

The next thing to check is the EHT tranformer, this may be the transformer with the twin bobbins or that round one nearby.

I could perhaps lend you an archaic fencer if you are not too far away so that your sheep may safely graze.

Change the big capacitor! It's a common cause for 'low' output. Just be sure to get a decent quality replacement.

that is a very kind offer duke37 thank you! I am a bit far away to accept unfortunately.
I only have a fence tester. I assume i would need some proper 'leccy kit to test the components? If i would have to buy testing kit i may as well bite the bullet and send it off to be repaired instead and teh price will end up the same and even if i found the fault i cant replace it myself or would muck the whole board up trying and still have to send it off! I get frustrated when i cant do a job myself!

Good quality capacitors can be obtained from RS comonents or Farnel. The 3.3μF capacitor has a hard time and there are special expensive capacitors available used in Gallagher fencers

Edit: RS components
Vishay polypropylene 600V 3.3μF, £6.16
