hey people getting into arduino is getting fun, but the cost of battery packs is starting to get high so was looking at the solar alternative. the issue is as always how to do it RIGHT

I was thinking of plugging the solar panels straight in but in low light or at night that wouldn't be an option

so i wanted to use something like good old energiser rechargeables in combination with solar. but the question becomes how?

I am thinking of using 5 batteries to provide roughly 6v (a little bit high for the 5v board I know but the alternative was 4.8v and I figured that was too low, and the board can take up to 12 volt).
can I just find a 6v solar panel and plug it in parrallel or am I missing a step? at this point the projects are basic but later they will get a little more extravagent so if this setup is fine i will just add more solar panels as I go.

also I am going to have a little setup to measure the output power just to make sure I am supplying more solar during the day than battery power

you will want at least 1 small diode to make sure that when the panel isn't charging its not acting as a drain on the battery.

Also where are you inputting the power from the batteries to the Arduino?
How do you figure 6v? 1.5v*5 = 7.5v
