I have a Sony DVP-S360 DVD/CD player, but when I put in a DVD, it says "no
disc". However, CDs play just fine. Is there a separate setting that
needs to be activated to play DVDs?

Lots of bad pickups in those, and yes, it's possible to have a bad pickup
and still play cd's, though it would be unusual.

I would suspect the laser assy. They had a bad run of laser assy's in the
earlier models of that machine. By-the-way, it is designed to only play
pressed CD disks. This model, like many other Sony models, will only play
pressed CD disks, not burned ones like you would do on your home CD burner.

I have one that plays burned discs fine, but YMMV

This model will do CD-RW but not CD-R.
