Surgical Binocular Loupe

The eyes aren't getting better as I age, I'm up to 4.25 and 5.25 diopters
on my contacts. I have been known to put
on three pairs of readers, to read numbers on a diode or remove a sliver,
etc.
For several years I have thought about surgical glasses, I have quizzed my
dental technician a few times, and found they
are quite expensive. In my pursuit to save a few hundred dollars, I'm
looking at these.

http://cgi.ebay.com/3-5x-BINOCULAR-...770?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1e60c2bc2a

They have a focus at about 12 inches and it looks like the inter pupillary
distance is adjustable.
Anyone have input?
Thanks, MikeK

Looks pretty good.

I use the eyepiece from a nice rifle scope as a simple hand held
magnifier "loupe". It is always an optical doublet too, so there is
always nice edge to edge focus. Unlike single lens 10X loupes where the
fringes are quite distorted and one can only see near the center of the
lens.

They are like 6 to 8 inch eye relief though. So instead of it being
near your eye, it is typically near your work piece.

So, you could use something like that along with your normal eyewear.

Those binocs are nice though. They give a 12" focus and remain near
the eye, so having a pair is like getting new eyes all over again.

I should have mentioned, I have an Optivisor with a 5x lenses with a swing
in loupe attached.
Focal distance becomes a problem with contacts, readers, optivisor 5x and
loupe.

The first link was from India
This one is from China, and has a longer focal length 16.5 inches vs 12
inches.
http://cgi.ebay.com/3-5-X-Dental-Su...451?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item27b774b863
75 grams vs 100 grams
Better, worse?

Available state side, 19.5" focus, field of view 3.4" depth of focus 6"
The last two specs are not mention on other two Loupes.
This is 3 times the price ($190), have specs but look, cheaper... to me.
64 grams vs 75 grams

Thoughts?

Maybe you can find something suitable at a watchmaker/clockmaker supply
house...

Good luck.

Thanks John,
But I'm ready to graduate from Optivisors, I have two pair, I think one is
over
thirty years old.
I'm ready for something that allows me to work from at least 12 inches.

He doesn't want a microscope. He want free head movement, you dopey
ditz.

Are you really that poor at reading comprehension?

No, No, I think he's about to mail it, leave him alone, it's not a
microscope, it's
just what I want. It has just the right amount of head movement.
John your not a dopey ditz, your highly intelligent with a lot of
Mantis experience. You know it is just what I need!
Phew! hope I corrected that little intrusion.
MikeK :)
Oh, and your a good reader too.

USB Scope?
<http://www.loopygadgets.com/2007/09/usb-digital-microscope/>

The HD webcams are pretty good, my C910 has a focus distance of 2" to
infinity.
A gorilla pod may be in order here.

It's not your eyes, things are just getting smaller! ;)

In any case, I use a 47x boom scope at my bench for some
work. I can count the hairs from any organism running around
on the parts!

Oh, and your a good reader too.

Yep. He's gonna send you his $11k mantis. Sure.

You can get a cheap old B&L on ebay if that's what you are after.

You should make up your fucking mind what you want, because you are
currently morphing it with each post.

A Mantis isn't a microscope in the regular sense.

I don't need a fucking 'dipshit-oquy' primer.

I know what they are. We only have about a hundred of them in our labs.

Two girls, one a PhD biologist and the other one sort of my boss, and
two grandbrats so far. How about you?

John

Biologist? Wasn't it you that said psych major?

What did she say about that nasty ooze coming out of your ears?

That's right John, I would never expect you to send me the 11k Mantis.
That would be greedy on my part.

PS. Does anyone think theglimmerman has a glimmer of humor about life?
Do you think he's Australian?

It appears that his whole purpose in life is to find a way to trigger a
response from anyone who disagrees with him so he can play his little
game of humiliation and bolster his importance. He feels he must be the
center of attention, similar to the way serial killers feel. He seems to
have found a way to justify his "Ruby Ridge" attitude by using some past
event to invoke hatred in himself and spew it on others.

Some of his assertions smack of some background knowledge but his
presentations (if you know what I mean) kind of gets thing off on the
wrong foot. I'll bet he could be a reasonable contributor if he were to
settle down and be a gentleman.

How about it, GlimmerMan? Want to try to get along with us?

Cheers,
John

I have something similar.
It's EXTREMELY difficult to adjust.
And since it's not rigid, it won't stay adjusted.
Then there's the alignment problem.
If you tilt your head or smile, your face shifts enough to move them
out of optimal position. Move your eye off center on a telescope
and you get the same effect.
The autofocus part of my eyes doesn't work well any more, so
there's no "slack" to adjust for changes in focus as the specs shift.
Work great if I use both hands to hold them into
optimum position on my face, but that kinda defeats the
purpose.

My dentist has the ones that look like little pyramids stuck on ordinary
glasses. He likes 'em. But his eyes work normally without them,
so it's more forgiving.

I've recently been looking into the webcam mentioned elsewhere.
I thought autofocus would be necessary.
Lots of googling and a visit to Best Buy to look at one in action
convinced me that autofocus is not a good idea. The things are
constantly trying to refocus. Most people say they turn it off.

The Itel CS330 (up thru winXP) and CS630(driver works in win7) cameras
make excellent close-up usb cameras.
Have CCD sensors, good light sensitivity and decent optics. And they're
almost free.

As a substitute for a magnifier, they work well. I think it will
take practice to get coordinated looking at a monitor instead of
the direction where your hands are.

I also had a chance to look at some of the USB microscopes.
The toy ones are crap.
But the $50-$200 ones make nice images. The one I saw had no focus control.
You just adjust the zoom, then adjust the distance for focus.
Worked quite well over a WIDE range of magnification.
As soon as I find one under $10, I'm gonna get one.

No, he's not Australian. He's a San Diego fairy.

I am not from Autralia.

I also am not from San Diego much less California altogether.

I am also not gay.

Looks like the Thompson retard fucks up facts again.

Goddamned shame he wasn't outside a certain Tuscon grocery store this
morning. He would have been a great candidate to have eaten some of that
lead.
