  1. I have no idea which one is the most commonly used; the larger displays tend to be common anode, simply because it is easier to drive them with a higher voltage (the segments may be 2 or more LEDs in series) with open-collector drivers like the 7447 or even just buffers like the 2003 or 2803.  Smaller displays are common as both kinds; my experience with multiplexed ones is that the common-cathode ones are slightly easier to deal with, with a hefty 2803 or similar driving each entire digit, and the segments driven in turn by something like the 4511 ...


  2.     Staigen you are right
          I am new to electronics and find it easier to learn when I have something to study.  I could see some interest in a front end for wideband oscilloscope connected to a computer. Or maybe a frequency counter. Capacitor meter is another good one.
            Something to do and help people study.

  3.   I thought an FPGA was a socket you put a chip into. Then I did a web search and found out that FPGA stands for Field Programmable Gate Array.  I guess I don't know anything about fpga's but I do know a little about Microcontrollers and if I did a web search on just about any of the projects you listed something would show up.

      Fist off (12-5) /.030 = 233.3333333 or 230 ohm's
      sencond think of voltage as pressure, the difference between two poles
      third  think of current (amps) as volume, amount of electrons that are there
                that are being pushed by the pressure behind em. (voltage)
    Fourth Resistance  Think of that as being something  in front of the electrons
                                    that will try to stop the electons from passing through.
                                    at best slow them down.
          Now the more the voltage (pressure) behind the curent (electrons) the more Resistance  it will take to stop the curent from traveling.
          If the circuit is 12 volts and you have a certain amount of amperage you want to use you would place resistance between the voltage and the needed curent. With the right amount of resistance it dosn't matter what voltage you are using 
    as long as the electrons (curent or volume) are running in the right amount. .030amp means so much electroins (amount of volume), You could have a million volts behind the .030amps and as long as you have enough resistance  to stop the electrons or slow them down  to .030 amps ( volume of electrons) it will work.
      If you could do that the over all voltage of that circuit would be a million volts.
            The amps create heat. Someome figured that an amp is  something like 6 billion single electrons moveing through a conductor in one second. (not me)
      and the more you slow it em down the more friction that is caused (heat).
      and that is were low voltage comes in, lower pressure means less resistance needed (less friction) witch means less heat.

  6.     I bought a Phone at Radioshack that can do that. I can dial on both lines, but one on hold and talk on the other. Or haha but them both on hold and walk away. Neat the phone only cost about 20 bucks

  7.     I don't know anything about jammers but if anyone comes up with a personal cell phone jammer that say jams any reception within 15 yards let me know. I hate feeling like a ease droper.

          Playing with Pic's is fun and addicting. I guess i would want to know were your at  as far as having the tools. Like a breadboard, extra parts to play with and so on. Radio Shack dose have some stuff but they are expensive.
        Also picbasic is ok but I found asm easier to learn and the compiler is free and there is a lot of free help on the web.

    ah a few things I noticed wrong.  First use a 10K resistor for pin 4(MCLR) Then I was wondering why so many battires? You would only need one 9 Volt. Not all the leds will be on at once. Also you don't need the 4066's the pic will do all the work. I have a good web site tutorial link for you.

I live in an old old house built around 1870's    the wires for the electric were put in sometime in the 20's not sure but there is no coded wire all of them are bare and there must be at lest 100 proceline insulators in the house.  Only thing new is the circutbox that was put in in the 60's. I don't mess with the wires in this house to much. Still haven't figured out how they got 220 running into the kitchen. ha

  11. I use a aquarium heater.
          My tank is a simple tupperware cantainer I picked up at ST. Vinnys for a buck. Then I stoped off at  Wallmart and bought a air pump and one of thoses long air stones and a heater. The heater cost the most, I think it was around 15 bucks.
          It takes the heater about one hour to heat the tank  (my holds a gal.) to around 105 degs F. Been using it for over a year .
