  1. It has been my experience that most ALL of them will produce a gerber. There are not good gerber and bad gerber files. It either is or it is not. So, the differences in the software packages ar chosen by what you like best in the application. User interface, selection of parts, ability to create library parts, support offered by the author, etc.

    My personal choice is Eagle. Demo version is at www.cadsoftusa.com or www.cadsoft.de
    There are also some others in the download section of this site.

  2. I have not yet heard that this re-engineered device works. Has someone built it? ...and who on this site has had the inverter that we are discussing here blow caps or come close to being injured?

    I would like to hear some input. Other than yours. You seem to be the only person on this forum condemning this project. No one has the experience of building it.
    In regards to posts about projects, I have noticed that those who have a good experience building a project, usually do not post. It is usually those who cannot make a project work or those who are asking for help that post. Therefore, if you are going to base your opinion on how many posts are about problems with a project, you are not going to get a good overall view of how people are doing with a project.

  3. It would be a 4.7K ohm resistor tied to the 5 volt buss.
    If the switch is not very good and has a lot of bounce, you might get additional triggering. If this is the case, you will have to add a debounce circuit to the switch, which is just a digital gate and some components around it.

    1 step is not much. You might have to put your finger on the shaft of the stepper motor to notice the movement.

    Thank you for the feedback on this project.

    Also, if you would like to forward your modifications to the circuit, we will have them posted for the next person who is considering this project.

    From your description, it seems that the circuit worked fine with removal of the preamp and a 60 HZ high pass filter added. Was there some amplification in the high pass filter that compensated for the removal of the pre-amp or was it simply not needed?

  5. audioguru, I work with them every day. It is not the opposite. It is both. I only mentioned the side that I work from. It can happen both ways, which is why they are separated.
    Add a motor to a microprocessor circuit without the separation and tell me that the microprocessor can handle it. Not.

  6. I did just get the following error message when changing to a different forum area:
    Fatal error: Cannot redeclare phpadmentor_maxinttonull() (previously declared in /home/electronics-lab.com/www/advertising/phpadmentor_config.php:18) in /home/electronics-lab.com/www/advertising/phpadmentor_config.php on line 18

    I think it was trying to load one of the advertisements. Pressing the refresh button at the top reloaded the page correctly within seconds. I did not lose connection and I did not have to log back in. Hope this is helpful to someone.

  7. Siddharth, have you been hearing ante? It is dangerous. But if you must, then the answer is yes. You can build one of these for any voltage that you need. Just choose the appropriate zener value and calculate the series resistor for the current. Those are the only changes that will matter for functionality of the circuit. I built such a power supply several years ago for power amps. The difference was, I used a 1:1 transformer for isolation. I was working with the same voltages but I was isolated from the mains when working on the equipment powered.

  8. It is necessary in a layout which uses digital devices and analog devices to use a different voltage buss on the circuit board for each. These ground busses are then connected at one axis. This keeps the digital circuitry clean of the transients introduced by the analog circuitry.

  9. In case this will help anyone:
    The standard "Windows Paint" program found in "accessories" will convert files. When you open a file in the program, you can "Save As" a different type. If you use "attributes" you can change the size of the file.

    If you are using Adobe Acrobat 6 to read pdf files, you have the option of capturing a picture to the clip board. Once you do this, go to "Paint" and click on "Paste". The selection will appear there. You can then save it as bmp, jpg, jpeg, gif, tiff and some others.

    I have other graphic converters, but these methods work pretty fast for me. Just wanted to share. ;)

  10. kevin, perhaps I am not understanding, but I thought you wanted to find the resistance of wire when knowing the thickness and length. If this is the case, there is a nice little calculator here at the link:

  11. FlipFlop, the material you see on the boards is called solder mask. It is cured at about 300 degrees F after it is silked onto the boards. Normal quantity is 5 gallon container or larger.
    For the hobbyist, you can get a similar spray on material. I have seen it at www.pulsar.gs in the past. I am not sure if they still carry it, but if not, an e-mail to them might send you in the right direction.

  12. EIST, the solution of using a battery would be a simple solution. As you have stated, the alternative is to use a transformer. The voltmeter needs a different source than the voltage which it is measuring.
    If you could describe something about the rest of the project, maybe we can come up with another alternative. It sounds as if the project has some voltage in it to be measured. Perhaps there is a place where you can tap some of it.

  13. siddharth, the resistor before the zener is calculated as follows:
    You have a different voltage on each side, input voltage on the one and zener voltage on the other. Subtracting these voltages gives you the voltage drop of this resistor. Figure out how much current you need through this circuit using this voltage drop and use ohm's law to figure R. Then figure Watt rating needed for the resistor from there with the power formula.

    LDanielRosa, you might have misunderstood my comments, but I was describing a circuit where one leg of the input is only common. In the countries where this is used, it is actually against the electrical code to put your breaker or fuse on this side of the circuit. This is because if this fuse went out but the other one did not, you would have a live circuit waiting for a path to ground through any means.

  14. I would tend to agree with LDanielRosa. A microprocessor would be a good way to go. As far as this not being original: Obviously a statement from one who does not program. That would be like saying that there are a lot of op amp circuits, so using one in a new design is not original. The code for a microprocessor will give you complete control of the LEDs in any sequence, pattern, brightness, etc. The program can be as original as you need for it to be - because you are writing it.

    In those days, few people except you and me knew much about transistor circuits! Those Philips engineers just didn't know


    You seem to give yourself quite a lot of credit. I find it hard to believe.
    Perhaps you could get a job with Phillips and teach them a few things... ::)

  16. closer than what you might think ante. What you have stated is approximately what I was saying but in a different way. I have not had much use for square wave inverters in the past.
    Linear is quite different as I have found on my bench, though. And of course, the sinewave inverters are a little different because of this.

    A comment about changing the transistors: Why would you do anything different? If the circuit has caused a break down in one transistor, I would be willing to believe the others have had a hard life as well. I always replace components as sets, too.
