Frequency meter

I would appreciate it if someone would advise or give me a circuit to measure frequency using the 4000 series ICs and either 3 or 6 digits 7 segment displays

Since it's only audio freq that you need have you considered a free software PC scope? It wouldn't surprise me if some of them have a digital readout too.
