now I know you will wonder about me...
On the schematic the diodes are created with a vertical bar >>> | <<< and aa solid arrow against one side..
----->|------
the anode is the arrow --->| and the cathode is the bar...
Is this correct?
If so the little white line on the diode signifies the anode right?

Or is this a matter for the datasheets?

holy heck I wired up my new diodes completelyl backward... sure glad I second check then second guess then be second, cause if I first checked then first guessed and was first, It would probably explode.
I have found sparkfun very useful...

BUT IT DOESN'T SAY WHAT THE WHITE LINE IS----
I understand that the farther down the diode the white line is, the less PN junction the diode has and the less current it takes to avalanche from A to K. or K to A as the case may be.

The position of the line only indicates which lead is the cathode. It has nothing to do with the characteristics of the diode.

In the symbol of the diode above chop it in half and throw away everything to the right. Do you see a K?

And the line on the device isn't always white. Black lines are common on sides that aren't black.

I remember it as the line on the device is the line on the symbol.

Like most semiconductor devices, a diode has a part number. The datasheet for the part number has all the specifications and even has graphs.

The problem is, not all have part numbers on them
I could show you dozens of diodes with no part numbers, many totally blank other than the cathode bar, others just a couple of colour bands
Others with just a single digit ... the manufacturer ( whoever they are) only knows what that means ??
