Keep files to less than 200kb, preferably less than 100kb
keep files to an absolute max pixel size of 1024x768
Preferably 800x600

Best program for resizing images is IrfanView

IrfanView 64-bit version

choose the 64bit or 32 bit which ever suits your computer
dead easy to use and is free.
I have been using it for some 20 years
