I need to get a camera to record in the rear window of my car that is turned on and only when I'm driving
Will this 12v battery need a v regulator
Any advice on type of camera or general advice would be appreciated
This setup is for security reasons and all manually operated
Thanks, colum

Not if it is designed for automotive use.
This will have no connection to the car it will just be a 12v battery and a camera and an on off switch and what ever electric component t power the cameras v. My current front dashcam has the adaptor plug into the cigarette lighter
Thanks, colum

How far back would you like to clearly record a vehicles licence plate & type of bug splat?
How many hours of record time ,storage capacity?
what 12Volt battery chemistry are you using?

Good points
Mostly bumping to hijack so probably 4 car lengths and then licence plate reading at some point. (a guess)
Bug splat ?
12v rechargable whatever type is applicable (with advisement)
This assembly would be removed when car parked so I know it would be obvious
It would only be used on local trips to stores or 1 hour and then erased if no issue
There may be a time visiting inlaws 4 hrs I think that may be asking too much.
Thank you for your response

So, go out and buy one suitable for an automobile.
There are units with front and rear facing cameras, some with both in the same package for low cost, maybe $40.00 or less.
Most will have "sugar cube" size camera which is almost undetectable if mounted near your rear number plate.
Some are even "wireless".
They will have all the necessary included such as sd recording.
SD card to suit will be almost, if not more than the unit itself.
This is because the required type sd card needs to be one that withstands continuous "writing and re-writing" to memory.
Run it off a 3s LiPo if you must but I don't see the point in introducing yet another power supply into a vehicle.

I see your point about getting too complicated and I agree about the small camera in the rear licence plate
but that would require remote control and another card and power supply
The multi camera on the front dash would be too obvious and would need a connection to the fuse block and
and wiring to run around the car inside (when 2 cameras are used).
I do appreciate your input and I think if you would recomend a movie camera with an internal battery and a memory card
that would do about half hour
I see what you mean about the memory card.
I must research the3s LiPo
Thanks again for your advice

Most of this is ill-informed or just plain incorrect.
