Hi.
What to expect feeding a plain 12VDC automotive ignition coil with 12VAC ?

I think it would depend on the frequency as ignition coils are pulsed DC.
Our homes are 50/60Hz depending on what country you’re in.
This may be far too slow and constant and over heat the coil.
But I’ve never tried it so it’s only a guess.

12Vac would likely saturate the core, causing the primary current to be limited only by the primary resistance.

It would increase the voltage by about a factor of 100 for a typical ignition coil, but you need to limit the applied voltage to a few volts so the current stays at a few amps as determined the the typical primary inductance of a few mH and your main's frequency.

Note that there is no isolation between primary and secondary windings (which may or may not be a problem, depending on what you intend to use the coil for).

Thanks. Editing: Yes, at 60Hz.
Will it jump 60Hz sparks a reasonable gap not being pulsed DC ? Would it be useable as to electrify a barbed wire fence - deterrent ?

Doubt that you get more than a few hundred volts at 60Hz, which likely is not enough to go through the hair to skin of most animals..
Also, that is generally lethal to humans, so make sure your insurance policy covers that.
You might try one of the many circuits on the web designed to generate a few thousand volt spark at a pulse rate of one/sec or so, using an ignition coil, which will deter most animals without being dangerous to humans.

Hello,

Have a look at a circuit created by danko on AAC:
Timing might be adjusted for longer times between pulses.

There is also the later version, used at present on modern auto's, the primary is isolated from the secondary, know as waste spark versions.
